Message From Mrs. America

"Set an example of good health habits for your children," says Laurett Ellsworth Arenz of Virginia. "The importance of good nutrition and exercise taught early on can lead to a lifetime of healthy practices."

As part of an overall health program, Laurett advocates the importance of adequate water consumption. "Water is vital for every system in our bodies. I try to drink 8 to 12 glasses of water each day."

Unfortunately, few Americans are drinking all the water they should. A recent survey by the Water Quality Association showed that only one in five Americans is drinking eight or more glasses of water each day. Yet, according to Laurett, drinking water is one of the most effective steps you can take to improve your overall health and fitness.

"Many of us don’t get all the water we need," she continues, " and children – especially those who are ill – need even more water than adults do." Since water makes up a higher percentage of children’s bodies, they dehydrate more quickly. Laurett recommends giving your children water several times a day.

Water improves energy, memory and digestion. Water also provides a host of other health benefits, such as improving exercise efficiency and endurance, moisturizing skin, fighting off common colds and much more.

When not fulfilling her duties as Mrs. America 2002, Laurett serves as spokesperson for the Sharing Love Foundation, which aids families of children with life threatening diseases. She is also mother of five children and two step-kids.

Laurette enjoys clear, clean-tasting water from the RainSoft reverse osmosis drinking water system that’s installed in her home. Her husband, Dave, and children all find that having delicious drinking water makes it easy to choose water over other beverages.
